Day Trips from Phoenix, Tucson, & Flagstaff: Getaways Less Than Two Hours Away

One of the best travel guides you'll ever buy!
This book is filled with great suggestions of places to go and things to see/do. It's extremely well organized and filled our week in Tucson with adventure and fun. We hardly ever even traveled the same road twice, there were so many listings. We'd tried the "standards" and found them lacking. There were so many areas around the city of Tucson we'd never heard of, and this book helped us organize our time and travel, although some of the day trips are truly impossible to complete in a day. In fact, we spent most of our time in Tucson outside of Tucson (if that makes any sense). A truly fantastic area guided by a truly fantastic book. If this author has written more books of the same ilk, I'll gladly buy them and enjoy.

What a Great Book!!
The book is very informative and gives you lots of options to choose from. Each section opens up with a map drawing the starting location and all the stops you would make along that perticular trip. There are complete driving directions to help you along the way. It is very easy to combine parts of different trips to suite your own interests, if you desire something different than what is already listed. Another good thing about this book is that it has listings of places to stay, where to eat, and when festivals occur(listed by month.) The descriptions of places to visit include whether or not it is for the casual observer or experienced hiker/climber. I love this book. If you are going to Arizonia, don't pass this book up. It will lead you in the right direction!!

Favorite Hikes: Flagstaff & Sedona by Cosmic Ray
Just got back from Arizona- and we used this book extensively as it was easy to read, the maps accurate, and the book is quite entertaining. My 6 year old son stated that the Lava River Cave trail "changed his life" (in a good way). The trail trips turned out to be the highlight of our trip!! The authors advise is excellent and the designation of level of difficulty is on target.

The best No. Arizona Hiking Book....BAR NONE!
This is it...look no further...

Trail maps and information as well as local business area beta....covers all the well-known hikes and even some of the lesser known...

A must hiking guide for Northern Arizona.

Both Sedona and Flagstaff are covered....the book is stout and put together very well; this sturdiness provides needed protection in your pack!!

thanks!
As a transplanted Montanan, I don't trust much advice on hiking in Arizona. I thank you for the Favorite Hikes book. I used to hike in the Glacier and Bozeman area but have been out of the action for a few years since moving to Flagstaff and having a baby. I have found this guide to be accurate and reliable when planning hikes with my son and/or dog. Thanks again. Buying this book is the best 10 bucks I ever spent.

Storming Heaven

Non-stop suspense and action, a Great Read
Kyle Mills has created an interesting character in Mark Beamon - a suffering, slightly edgy, moral man who refuses to back down, kind of like a pit bull who will protect til the end. The introduction of a cult-like religion was a twist. This book was so well written, planned out, it had you rooting for Mark Beamon (along with a cast of characters that were irritating, frightening and endearing). There were so many surprises and the premise of our privacy being invaded by a group of people with a different agenda was definitely not a far fetched idea.

Couldn't get enough.......
This was my first Kyle Mills book but not my last...I have already ordered Rising Phoenix. Should have read it first.... The character, Mark Beamon, was believeable, funny, and sincere. The story line was also one that could actually happen (far fetched, but possible). I enjoyed the dialogue that Beamon had with his peers and associates. He kept the action hopping and the conclusion in focus. A surprise ending which was super. Great read (don't start if if you have plans to do anything else for at least 2 days)

Compelling!
This is one of the best books I've ever read. I couldn't put it down and finished in one day. Mr Mills definitely goes on my "favorite authors" list. He is one heck of a writer. I read his other novel "Rising Phoenix" which was also good, but not as good as "Storming Heaven". Get comfortable before you start reading "Storming Heaven", and be warned, you will not be able to put it down. I just loved all the good guys. They all contributed to a wonderful story. Mark Beamon is now another one of my fictional heroes. I can't wait to read "Free Fall". Keep up the good writing Mr Mills.

Mountain Biking Flagstaff and Sedona
Published in Digital by Falcon Publishing ()

Where's the single track?
This is a collection of mostly oddball rides done by the author of several of Falcon Press' hiking guides. He seems to prefer too many long rides through the trees on washboardy forest service dirt roads without much of a mountain bike feel to them. You can do most of the rides in a car. There needs to be more attention to what mountain bikers really like . . . carving single track trail with varied surface over interesting terrain (i.e. some rough, some rocky, some steep, some smooth and some easy), views, cool destinations and more loop rides. Nice try for a first edition. However, the author is not really a mountain biker, just a hiker taking a stab at what he thinks mountain bikers would like. Ho-hum.

An excellent vistor's guide to the Flagstaff area
I've visited the Flagstaff area on a regular basis since 1980. We planned a 4-day, late-November vacation around several books ordered from Amazon.com. Only the Grubbs book arrived by the time we left Southern California. Off my 16-year-old son and I headed for Arizona with the book and our matching Specialized Stumpjumpers. We did 3 of the author's rides rides and found the book accurate as to location, distance, and intensity of the rides. For me, a roadie with limited mt. biking skills the book was outstanding. My son, a good racer, enjoyed the time also. We will be back to do more rides from Grubb's book.

get a different flagstaff hiking guide
i felt the need to ward people away from this guidebook, i'm a local hiker, and only appreciate the book because it is so comprehensive. typically i'f i want to try a hike from this book, i will find it in another guide, and use their directions. the mileages are off, in both the hiking and driving. there are no hiking maps, only driving. Most hikes are very short, and very easy. directions are ... poor, and it's hard to stomach the author portraits on the back of the book. only buy this book if you plan on hiking EVERYTHING in flagstaff, otherwise you are buying an over comprehensive guide, when a "best of flagstaff" hikes book would show you the goods, and be far more useful. i hate this book.

Flagstaff Hikes
We found this book to be extremely helpful as we were new to the area and weren't sure where to go. The maps were very detailed and precise. The descriptions helped us choose which hikes would be of greatest interest to us. Definitely a book to buy!

Too small. Poor maps.
...The confusing maps are computer mouse drawn using the standard icons for trails and landmarks. Trouble is with these pint size guides, the dots, dashes, solid lines, hollow lines, squiggily lines, circles and boxes and a half dozen other gibberish route representations all blend together to make the maps look like a tiny plate of jumbled electroninc spaghetti. My first reaction was "Which way is up?" Nor is there a countour profile to quickly identify altitude gain over distance.

...This guide is a disappointment....
